Brain Gym

braingymlogoBrain Gym is a system of quick and enjoyable movements that reduce stress naturally and quickly enhance brain function. It is suitable for everyone, from babies to seniors. This wonderful program has been around for 30 years, and it’s estimated to be used by well over 10,000 schools in 88 countries around the world. It enhances rather than replaces programs already in place; requires no special space or equipment, so it is very budget-friendly, and reduces stress levels in school staff as well as students.

Although Brain Gym can be used in classrooms, the program is also useful in private sessions, called “balances.” Private sessions are helpful for moving through learning challenges, or any other kind of block that people might be experiencing. A balance involves setting a goal, doing a pre-activity to notice where any blocks might be, choosing Brain Gym or other movements, then repeating the pre-activity to notice any new shifts. Brain Gym movements are often recommended as follow-up activities to anchor the learning experience. Samples of balance goals include: test anxiety, public speaking, writing, performance anxiety in sports, music, etc.

Presentations & In-services
Katy also loves to share her knowledge of Brain Gym, Bal-A-Vis-X and other programs at workshops and in-services, to give teachers, para-professionals, OTs, PTs, social workers and parents tools to lower their own stress levels as well as that of their students/clients and children.
Education Through Music
Education Through Music (ETM) is a program that engages children on many levels through song-experience games. Singing engages both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously, and opens the heart. This program helps children feel more grounded and stable socially, as everyone is included; it also teaches them impulse control, as they have to wait their turn. Children also learn language more readily through these fun and engaging songs. The program is profound and fun at the same time.

There are a couple options for learning more about ETM. The first option is through their Winter Courses, which are offered in three sets of three 3-hour sessions during a school year. Another option is through their Summer Colloquium, a 4-5 day gathering at a different location every summer, for a more in-depth experience of ETM.

ETM also hosts a wonderful summer fine arts camp in Grand Rapids in June. The camp is open to parents and children, with programs for the very young, as well as teens and even grandparents. It is a wonderful mix of song-games, art, and storytelling. It is a heartwarming experience that Katy recommends highly; she doesn't intend to miss this camp until her son graduates from high school at least!

Private Sessions
As the mother of a child with a disability, Katy’s passion is working with children with all kinds of challenges, and their parents. Katy encourages parents to be involved and learn about the Brain Gym and/or Bal-A-Vis-X process and make a commitment to continue the "play" at home--helping to create a healthy, choice-filled lifestyle. When Katy works with a child, she asks that parents attend a 3-hour Brain Gym Introduction within one month of the initial appointment. You'll understand the process and see what changes can be made--for yourself or another. And with every group of 4 sessions for a child, either parent gets a free session.

0“Bal-A-Vis-X” is a brain integration program that integrates the senses of BALance, Auditory and VISion using rhythmic eXercises done with beanbags or racquetballs while standing on a balance board.

This program is wonderful for people of all ages, from preschoolers through senior citizens. It helps Katy's son practice his spelling words, and also helps people with focus and attention, speech, auditory processing, and stress.  Feedback from senior citizens that Katy has worked with indicates that these exercises help people feel more alert and energized, and more steady on their feet.

Rhythmic Movement

Rhythmic Movement Training utilizes the movements babies naturally make as their neurological systems mature, enabling them to roll over, crawl, and eventually stand and walk. A baby's first movements are automatic movement patterns called reflexes, which are useful when the neurological-motor system isn't yet developed enough for the baby to make conscious movements. As the baby learns to move on its own, these reflexive movement patterns should fade away, or integrate. When these reflex patterns don't integrate, children can have trouble sitting still, paying attention, wetting the bed, or have many other challenges.

The Rhythmic Movements are gentle rocking movements that stimulate the brain and body and help the neurological system mature and integrate any retained reflex patterns. The movements are taught to the parents and child so that they can be done regularly at home, for about 10-15 minutes a day.  If the movements are done daily over a few months, parents have reported improvements in focus, attention, and behavior.

On-Site Consulting

Katy is also available for on-site consults with teachers or other school professionals to work with students in their classrooms using Bal-A-Vis-X and Brain Gym.

Masgutova Method for Reflex Integration

SvetlanaThe Masgutova Neuro-sensory-motor Reflex Integration - MNRI ™ Method is a set of programs focused on the restoration and maturation of primary movements, reflexes, coordination systems, and skills for optimal performance of natural mechanisms, developmental processes, brain functioning, and sensory-motor integration. Katy has taken several courses in the Masgutova Method, and will continue to study these techniques as her schedule allows. She successfully used the Masgutova Method to help several children stop wetting the bed. Some children were helped in one session; others took several sessions.
